Sisu | by Danh Vo

Sisu is a checkered upholstery designed by celebrated designer Nanna Ditzel, which references the iconic Hallingdal textile she designed for Kvadrat in 1965. The exhibition was curated by artist Danh Vo, who discovered the design in the Kvadrat archives and selected it for an exhibition at the Danish National Gallery (SMK) titled 'Take My Breath Away'.

Danh Vo discovered Sisu while researching the work of Nanna Ditzel—a journey sparked by his curiosity about the relationship between textiles and furniture. As he delved into her acclaimed body of work, he discovered that she often did not put her name on her most famous designs.

The expression of Sisu is reminiscent of looking at Hallingdal through a magnifying glass. The textile is woven with thick, voluminous wool yarns and features a bold yet subtle checkered pattern. Color blocks play across the surface, creating a tactile, rhythmic effect.
