Jaali is an architectural wool upholstery textile designed by Doshi Levien, in which pattern and texture combine in an intriguing way. When viewed up close, you see a fine grid of hexagonal shapes. But viewed from a distance, this pattern takes on the expression of a structure.

Named after the Hindi word for net or grid, Jaali is made from two single-colored yarns. The contrast between the lighter, tone-on-tone yarns used for the pattern and the smooth, flat surface creates a three-dimensional play of light and shadow. Curiously, this gives the textile both lightness and depth.

Although directionless, the teardrop-like shapes of Jaali's pattern add another dimension to the design. Together, they provide a subtle sense of weight and graphic movement.

Jaali is available in 20 colors, carefully selected from 1,500 woven samples. To develop these, Doshi Levien took the color scales of Lila and Raas - two other textiles they designed for Kvadrat - as a starting point. To complete the palette, the designers worked with fresh, unexpectedly colored neutrals.

Nipa Doshi: “We wanted to add colors that bring something new to the Kvadrat collection, but without being loud or overwhelming. We want people to use the colors we create and that is why we are introducing them slowly, in a subtle way."

Jaali combines particularly well with Lila and Raas, but also works well with the other fabrics in the Kvadrat collection. It is suitable for public and private spaces.
